(1) The rate of population growth in India has been declining since 1981, because of their inclination towards Education and hence people become aware about the population issues (like unemployment, poverty and hunger etc.) happening in our country. The role of birth control measures (contraceptive pills etc.), raise in the age of marriage for both men and women, sex-education are some other major reasons behind it.

The major components of population growth are as follows:

  • Birth rate is the number of live births per thousand persons in a year. In India, birth rates have always been higher than death rates.
  • Death rate is the number of deaths per thousand persons in a year. The main cause of the rate of growth of the Indian population has been the rapid decline in death rates.
  • Migration is also an important component of population change. Migration is the movement of people across regions and territories. Migration can be internal(within the country) or international(between the countries). In India, the rural-urban migration has resulted in a steady increase in the percentage of population in cities and towns.

Age Structure: the age structure of a population refers to the number of people in different age groups in a country. The population of a nation is generally grouped into three categories- Children (below 15 years), Working age (15-59 years) and Aged (above 59 years).

Death rate: the number of deaths per thousand persons in a year.

Birth rate: the number of live births per thousand persons in a year.
