Q.4

Give reasons as to why.

(1)Seasonal reversal of wind direction takes place over the Indian subcontinent?

(2)The bulk of rainfall in India is concentrated over a few months.

(3)The Tamil Nadu coast receives winter rainfall.

(4)The delta region of the eastern coast is frequently struck by cyclones.

(5) Parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat and the leeward side of the Western Ghats are drought-prone.

        (1)  Seasonal reversal of wind direction takes place over the Indian subcontinent because of pressure differences and El Nino conditions.

  • If the pressure differences will be negative, it shows below average or late monsoon conditions.
  • The presence of the El Nino leads to an increase in sea-surface temperatures and weakening of the trade winds in the region.

        (2) The Monsoon winds are not steady winds but are pulsating in nature. So, these winds are affected by different atmospheric conditions encountered by it, on its way over the warm tropical seas. Hence, only in the duration of 100-120 days from early June to mid-September, the rainfall occurs in the country.

        (3) During the cold weather season or winter season, the northeast trade winds prevail over the country. These winds blow from land to sea and hence the Coromandel coast or also known as the Tamil Nadu coast receives some amount of rainfall from these winds.

         (4) The low- pressure conditions, over north-western India, get transferred to the Bay of Bengal by early November and this shift is associated with the occurrence of cyclonic depressions, which originate over the Andaman Sea.

  • These tropical cyclones generally cross the eastern coasts of India cause heavy and widespread rain and are often very destructive.
  • The thickly populated deltas of the Godavari, the Krishna and the Kaveri are frequently struck by cyclones, which cause great damage to life and property.
  • These cyclones affect the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh. Also, the bulk of rainfall of the Coromandel Coast is derived from depressions and cyclones.

         (5) India has a monsoon type of climate, which is characterised by a distinct seasonal pattern.

  • The annual rainfall is highly variable from year to year and this variability is high in the regions of low rainfall.
  • The annual rainfall is less than 60 cm in western Rajasthan and adjoining parts of Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab.
  • So, Rajasthan, Gujarat and the leeward side of the Western Ghats are the areas of low rainfall and hence drought- prone.
