Q2.

Answer the following questions in about 30 words.

(i) Explain how water becomes a renewable resource.

(ii) What is water scarcity and what are its main causes?

(iii) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of multi-purpose river projects.

75 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water, but only a small proportion of this water accounts for freshwater which can be used by us. This freshwater is mainly obtained from rain, surface run off and ground water that is continuously being renewed and recharged through the water cycle or hydrological cycle which includes three basic processes – evaporation, condensation and precipitation. All water moves within the hydrological cycle which is never ending and which ensures and proves that water is a renewable resource.

Water scarcity can be defined as the shortage of water or unavailability of water to match the demand but it is not only associated with regions having low rainfall or those that are drought-prone.  Different places have different availability of water mainly due to the variations in seasonal and annual precipitation. Mostly water scarcity is caused by

a. Overexploitation or increase in population

b. Excessive use of water which includes waste of water and

c. Unequal access to water among different social groups living in that area.

Advantages of multipurpose river projects are-

  1. Irrigation
  2. Electricity production
  3. Flood control
  4. Fish breeding
  5. Inland navigation
  6. Provides employment

Disadvantages of multipurpose river projects are-

  1.  Damming of rivers affect their natural flow resulting in excessive sedimentation because of poor sedimentation flow at the bottom of the reservoir, resulting in rockier streambed and it also triggers floods.
  2. Dams also results in fragmentation of rivers making it difficult for aquatic fauna to migrate, especially for spawning thus destroying the local aquatic flora and fauna.
  3. Villages get submerged, people lose their livelihood with little or no hope of rehabilitation
  4. It has great ecological consequences like salinization of the soil. At the same time, it has increased the social gap between the richer landowners and the landless poor.
  5. The big dams have mostly been unsuccessful in controlling floods at the time of excessive rainfall.
  6. It also resulted in earthquakes, caused waterborne diseases, pests and pollution resulting from excessive use of water.
