Q1.

Explain:

a) Why growth of nationalism in the colonies is linked to an anti-colonial movement?

b) How the First World War helped in the growth of the National Movement in India?

c) Why Indians were outraged by the Rowlatt Act?

d) Why Gandhiji decided to withdraw the Non-Cooperation Movement?

a) The growth of modern nationalism is entirely connected to the anti-colonial movement. The process of people grappling with colonialism made them discover their unity. The sense of being oppressed under colonialism provided a shared bond that led to the unity among the people belonging to different groups. But different classes and groups felt the effects of colonialism in different ways different experiences, and their notions of freedom were not always the same.

b) During the First World War, custom duties were raised and income tax introduced to finance the defense expenditure. The forced recruitment in rural areas led to widespread anger. In 1918-19 and 1920-21, failed crops in many parts of India led to acute shortages of food.  In addition, people were also going through an influenza epidemic. These hardships of people did not end the war. Hence, they united under leaders to find a new way to struggle together.

c) Despite the united opposition of the Indian members, Rowlatt Act was passed hurriedly through the Imperial Legislative Council that gave enormous powers to the government to repress political activities. It also allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years. Mahatma Gandhi wanted non-violent civil disobedience against such unjust laws, which would start with a hartal on 6 April. Rallies were organized in various cities, workers went on strike in railway workshops, and shops closed down. Alarmed by the popular upsurge, and scared that lines of communication such as the railways and telegraph would be disrupted, the British administration decided to clamp down on nationalists.

d) In February 1922, Mahatma Gandhi decided to withdraw the Non-Cooperation Movement. He felt the movement was turning violent in many places and satyagrahis needed to be properly trained before they would be ready for mass struggles.
