In hydrocarbon chain if one hydrogen is replaced by chlorine atom it is called as alkyl halide 

example -  CH₃-CH₂-CH₃

If we replace Hydorgen from CH3 then

CH₃-CH₂-CH₂-Cl (This carbon compound is called alkyl halide)
