When the male and female gametes of a flowering plant do not lie on one typical flower, the process of sexual reproduction is hindered. The flower is the reproductive organ of a plant, and it contains both male and female gametes. The male gametes are produced in the anthers, while the female gametes are produced in the ovules. For sexual reproduction to occur, the pollen from the anthers must be transferred to the stigma of the same flower or another flower of the same species. This process is called pollination. Once pollination occurs, the pollen grain germinates and grows a tube that penetrates the stigma and reaches the ovule. The male gamete then travels down the tube and fuses with the female gamete to form a zygote, which eventually develops into a seed.
