After zygote formation, the zona pellucida remains intact until the cleavage starts. During cleavage, when the blastula stage is achieved (by the time the zygote descends down the fallopian tube from the ampulla to isthmus region and enters into the uterus) the zona pellucida hatches, releasing the blastocyst to get implanted in the uterine endometrium.
