The term 'stratum' means layers. Thus, stratification means creation of layers.

Vertical distribution of different species occupying different levels is called stratification.

For example, if you observe a forest ecosystem, the different layers are seen as:

Tree canopy occupying the topmost layer, followed by shrubs, then herbs and finally grass on the ground level.
