Sclerenchyma are simple permanent tissues whose cell die at maturity. Their cells are long, narrow and thick-walled and appear like fibres. Hence, they are also called fibres. Cell walls are thick due to deposition of lignin.

Their main function is to provide mechanical support and rigidity to the plants.
