Parenchyma is a type of simple permanent tissue which forms major part of ground tissues in plants. They are found in roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits. They are spherical in shape and are loosely p[acked having large vacuole.

They are non-vascular and composed of simple, living and undifferentiated cells, which differentiate to perform various functions.

Functions:

1. Main function of parenchyma tissue is the storage of food.

2. It helps in the storage of water, in xerophytes,

3. Parenchyma with abundant chloroplasts is called as chlorenchyma which perform photosynthesis.

4. Intercellular air spaces between the cells allow gaseous exchange.

5. These differentiate to form more specialized cells.
