

If you hit something hard, it can transfer all of that energy back in a single, sharp sound. Hit a wall, and you hear it as a crack: some energy is absorbed by the bricks (heating them up), while the rest is given back quickly as a sharp sound. (Also, the sound of your finger bones breaking.)
