Consider a book placed in a table. The weight of the book acts downward direction. The normal force acts in the opposite direction opposing that in the opposite direction.  Thus, the normal force is the support force exerted upon an object which is in contact with another stable object.

The tension force is the force that is transmitted through a string, rope, cable or wire when it is pulled tight by forces acting from opposite ends. Example: consider a 1Kg weight attached to a rope at one of its ends. The string experiences a tension opposite to the direction of weight attached.
