Question:
a steamer goes upstream and covers the distance between 2 ports in 5 hours while it covers the same distance downstream in 4 hours if the speed of the stream in 5 km/hour find the speed of the steamer in still water
Answer:

Let the speed of the stream in still water = x km/hr

Speed of the stream while going upstream = (x - 5) km/hr

Distance covered upstream = speed * time

                                            = (x - 5) * 5

                                            = 5(x - 5)

Speed of the stream while going downstream = (x + 5) km/hr

Distance covered downstream = speed * time

                                                 = (x + 5) * 4

                                                 = 4(x + 5)

Now, accordinh to question,

     5(x - 5) = 4(x + 5)

=> 5x - 25 = 4x + 20

=> 5x - 4x = 25 + 20

=> x = 45

So, the speed of the stream in still water = 45 km/hr
