Let us take some examples:

Ex1. Use suitable identity to evaluate 99² 

Solution: 99²  = (100 - 1)²

                      = 100² + 1² - 2*1*100        {(x-a)² = x² + a² - 2ax }

                      = 100*100 + 1*1 - 200

                      = 10000 + 1 - 200

                      = 10001 - 200

                      = 9801 

So,  99²  = 9801

Ex2. Find the value of 95 * 102 by suitable identity. 

Solution:

95 = 100 - 5

102 = 100 + 2

Now 95 * 102 = (100 - 5)*(100 + 2)

                     = 100*100 + 100*2 - 5*100 - 5*2  {(x-a)*(x+b) = x*x + bx - ax - ab}  

                     = 10000 + 200 - 500 - 10

                     = 10200 - 500 - 10

                     =  9700 - 10

                     = 9690

So, 95 * 102 = 9690

In this way, we apply identities in the question.
