Question:
Mam what is the difference between FeO and Fe₂O₃ Both are iron oxides However , when it is asked to write the chemical name of rust it is always said to write Fe₂O₃ So mam why not FeO And mam where FeO type of rust occurs and Fe₂O₃ type of rust occurs
Answer:

Dear sahil,

Though FeO & Fe2O3 are iron oxides but they are different. FeO is Ferrous oxide having Fe2+ ion & Fe2O3 is Ferric oxide having Fe3+ ion. There are few different types of rust but we are studying about the type of rust formed when iron is exposed to high moisture content & lot of oxygen which results into formation of rust which is chemically hydrated ferric oxide. Therefore, Fe2O3 is written in chemical formula of rust.
