Plants like banyan, mango and tamarind are big. If they had fibrous roots which do not penetrate deep into the soil, they will not be able meet the water needs of the plants. Hence, under conditions like droughts they may die. Moreover, due to shallow roots, the roots will not be able to anchor the tree with the soil efficiently, hence the tree may even fall down.
