Gastric glands are present in the wall of the stomach which secrete gastric juice. This juice contains the digestive enzyme pepsin, mucus and HCl.

• Enzyme pepsin is secreted in an inactive form called pepsinogen, which is activated by the release of HCl which makes the medium acidic for enzyme activation. HCl also, kills the pathogens that come with food.
• Pepsin, once activated, starts the digestion of proteins in stomach.
• Mucus protects the stomach walls from the acidic conditions.
