The product of refractive index and the distance travelled by light in that medium gives the optical path length. Consider light travelling in water through a distance of 100cm. The refractive index of water is 1.33. Hence, optical length = 1.33 * 100 cms = 133 cms. The distance 100 cms is called geometric length of the path.
