Why photodiode are always operated in reverse bias instead of forward bias
Answer:

Light emitting diode ( LED) is to emit light where as for photo diode it is to detect presence of light. When LED is forward biased, it emits light. In reverse biased mode, it works like a normal diode and does not emit light. In reverse bias mode, it starts conducting when photons from light strike the p-n junction. This helps in detecting presence of light, as circuit completes.
