Question:
calculate the half life and mean life of 1g Radium- 226 of activity 1 Ci
Answer:
  • 1 Ci means 1 curie which is 3.7 * 1010 decays/sec
  • The activity of radio active sample is said to be one curie, when 3.7 * 1010 decays take place in every second
  • Rate of disintegration = -dN/dt = 3.7 1010 decays
  • No of atoms of Ra 226 in 1 gram = N = Avagrado Number /226 = 6.025 * 1023 /226 = 2.6659 * 1021
  • According to radio active decay, -dN/dt = λN
  • 7 * 1010 = λ (6.025 * 1023 /226) which gives λ = 1.3879 * 1031
  • Half life Ʈ = 0.6931 / λ = 4938 * 1030 years
