Charge is a fundamental property of matter, related to the electromagnetic force. It is a characteristic of particles, such as electrons and protons, that gives rise to electric fields and electric forces. There are two types of charge: positive and negative.

1. Positive Charge: Protons carry positive charge. In the context of atomic structure, protons are found in the nucleus of an atom. The positive charge of protons is equal in magnitude to the negative charge of electrons.

2. Negative Charge: Electrons carry negative charge. Electrons orbit the nucleus of an atom in various energy levels or shells. The negative charge of electrons is equal in magnitude to the positive charge of protons.
