To charge a neutral pith ball negatively, bring a positively charged rod near the ball.Due to attraction the negative charges of ball come and collect at the near end from rod, and due to repulsion the positive charges collect at the further end in ball.Now connect the positive end of pith ball to ground using wire, electrons from ground come in ball and all the positive charge in ball disappears.
Now disconnect the pith ball from ground and remove the positive rod, we get the negative charge on pith ball.
