Question:
What are interstitial compounds? Why are such compounds well known for transition metals?
Answer:

Interstitial compounds are formed when an atom with a small enough radius sits in an interstitial space in a metal lattice. These small atoms can be hydrogen, boron, carbon and nitrogen.

Transition metals have large size and contains many interstitial spaces. Therefore they can easily accomodate C,H,N atoms in the interstitial site of the crystalline lattice and are thus called interstitial compounds.
