Question:
What is the role of graphite rod in the electrometallurgy of aluminium?
Answer:

In the synthesis of aluminium from electrometallurgically, graphite rod is used as an anode and graphite made line iron is used as cathode. During the electrolysis process, aluminium is liberated at the cathode and oxygen at the anode. Oxygen reacts with the graphite anode and forms CO and CO2. This prevents the oxygen evolved from oxidizing aluminium formed. Also, for the fact that graphite is the cheapest means of pure carbon, it is advantageous to use it.
