Incompatibility is the rejection of the self-pollen by the pistil. The pistil has the ability to recognise the self and the non-self pollen. Naturally, the pistil favours the germination of non-self pollen over the self-pollen through interaction of their chemical components, thereby increasing chances of cross pollination and reducing chances of self-pollination (i.e. fertilisation of ovule by self-pollen).
