Rhizopus species grow as filamentous, branching hyphae that generally lack cross walls i.e. theybare coenocytic. They reproduce by forming asexual and sexual spores. 

In asexual reproduction,sporangiospores are produced inside a spherical structure , the sporangium. A single sporangium develops at the tip of long, erect sporangiosphore. A dome shaped columella is present in each sporangium. The protoplast of columella is in continuation with that of sporangiophores. Each sporangiospores is ovoid, non motile, unicellular, multinucleate structure. There is no flagella on the spores.

In sexual reproduction, the zygospores is produced at the point where two compatible mycelia fuse. It is by conjugation. Hyphae belonging to different strains , plus or minus strains, come in close contact with one another. Meiosis occurs and spores are released from sporangium. Each spore can germinate and continue the life cycle.
