Law of Dominance states that out of the two contrasting alleles of a character, only one is able to express itself independently while the other remains hidden or masked.

The allele which expresses itself independently is called dominant allele and the trait it expresses is called dominant trait. While the allele that remains hidden or masked in the presence of dominant allele is called recessive allele and the trait that it expresses is called recessive trait.
