Human skin is sheet-like organ with 2 main parts:

1. Epidermis

2. Dermis

Epidermis:

- outermost thin layer of tightly packed cells

- composed of stratified squamous epithelium arranged in the following 3 layers:
(i) Stratum corneum (cornified layer) - outermost layer of dead cells
(ii) Stratified granulosum (granular layer)
(iii) Stratum germinativum (malpighian layer) - innermost layer of living cells

Dermis:

- Deeply located layer of skin much thicker than epidermis
- composed largely of connective tissue
- composed of 2 regions:
(i) Papillary region - consists of elastin fibres and dermal papillae which gives characteristic fingerprints to an individual
(ii) Reticular region - filled with dense network of collagen and elastin fibres; has hair follicles, nerves, blood vessels, oil glands and ducts of sweat glands
