Mitochondria (sing. mitochondrion) are double membrane bound cell organelles found in eukaryotic cells. They are known as the "powerhouse of the cell" as they store the chemical energy released during the oxidation of chemical substrates like glucose in the form of energy-rich molecules called ATPs (Adenosine triphosphates).
