In the year 2013-14, a new strian of malaria causing parasite called the Plasmodium knowlesi, was found to be assciated with mokeys being the carriers. This strain caused malaria that was 3 times more virulent than that caused by Plasmodium falciparum with reduced mortality rate. This was first observed in Malaysias Borneo, and is still prevalent in some more parts of the world. However, there have been no cases from India.
