The term "proto" means "first-formed" or "primitive". That means, protovirus is the first formed ancestral or primitive virus, which was a free-living virus represented by just a DNA sequence. This DNA sequence had the capability of incorporating itself into the host DNA and tranform it into oncogenic (cancer-causing) virus.
