An antibody can only bind to a specific antigen because of its structural complementarity with it. Structurally, The antigen and antibody fits into one anothers grooves (like a key does into a lock) which leads to increased specificity in these reactions. 

Antibodies are responsible for providing protection against infectious foreign agents which enter our body from the environment.
