Question:
A certain body weighs 22.42g and has volume 4.2 cu.cm. The possible errors in the measurement of mass and volume are 0.01g and 0.1cu.cm. Find the percentage error in density
Answer:

Density = Mass/Volume

= 22.42/4.2

= 5.338 g/cm3

Considering the error in mass, the mass would have been either 22.43g (22.42 + 0.01g) or 22.41g (22.42 - 0.01g)

In that case, density would have been either 5.340g/cm3 (22.43/4.2) or 5.335g/cm3 (22.41/4.2).

So percentage error can be calculated as, [(5.340-5.338)/5.338] x 100 (positive error) = +0.03

And, [(5.338-5.335)/5.338] x 100 (negative error) = -0.05

On an average we can say that, the percentage error in density with respect to mass is +/- 0.04.

Considering the error in volume, the volume would have been either 4.3 cu.cm (4.2+0.1) or 4.1 cu.cm (4.2-0.1)

In that case, density would have been either 5.214 g/cm3 (22.42/4.3) or 5.468 g/cm3 (22.42/4.1).

So percentage error can be calculated as, [(5.468-5.338)/5.338] x 100 (positive error) = +2.44

And, [(5.338-5.214)/5.338] x 100 (negative error) = -2.32

On an average we can say that, the percentage error in density with respect to volume is +/- 2.38.
