Carnot engine is a heat engine. It is a machine used for realising the ideal cycle of operation.

This is a theoretical engine and practically it is not possible to build such an engine which highest efficiency. All the other cycles of heat engine are based on Carnot engine only. Thus, it is used to compare the results of other cycles.
