Thermal expansion is tendency of matter to change in shape, area & volume in response to a change in temperature. When a substance is heated, the kinetic energy of its molecules increases & thus they move with higher speed & the object expands. Eg. A gap is kept between joints of railway track, to allow it to expand during summer.
