Question:
(a) Classify following oxides as neutral, acidic, basic or amphoteric: CO, B2O3, SiO2, CO2, Al2O3, PbO2, Tl2O3 (b) Write suitable chemical equations to show their nature.
Answer:

(a)  and (B) answered together

  1. CO = Neutral
  2. B2O3 = Acidic

B2O3 react with NaOH to form sodium metaborate

B2O3 + NaOH →2NaBO2 + H2O

  1. SiO2 = Acidic

SiO2 react with NaOH to form sodiium silicate.

SiO2 + NaOH → 2Na2SiO3 + H2O

  1. CO2 = Acidic

CO2 react with NaOH to form Soium carbonate

CO2 + NaOH → Na2CO3 + H2O

  1. Al2O3 = Amphoteric

It with both NaOH and H2SO4

Al2O3 + 2NaOH →NaAlO2

Al2O3 + 3 H2SO4 → Al2(SO4)  + 3H2O

  1. PbO2 = Amphoteric

PbO2 react with both H2SO4 and NaOH

2PbO2 + 2H2SO4 → 2PbSO4 + 2h2O + O2

PbO2 + 2NaOH → Na2PbO3 + H2O

  1. Ti2O3 = Basic

Ti2O3 react with HCl to form thallium chloride

.  Ti2O3 + 6 HCl → 2TiCl3 + 3H2O
