When carbon monoxide is more than usual in the atmosphere and it is inhaled, then it combines with the hemoglobin of the RBCs in blood to give carboxyhemoglobin. This is a stable compound, and thus it is then almost impossible for carboxyhemoglobin to combine with oxygen again. Thus, due to lack of oxygen, the person suffers from tissue damage, hypoxia and even death.
