Consider the compounds, BCl3 and CCl4. How will they behave with water ? Justify.
Answer:

Boron in BCl3 is electron deficient. Boron atom in BCl3 has only 6 electrons in the valence shell. It requires two more electrons to complete the octet. It will easily accept a pair of electron from water and undergo hydrolysis to form boric acid as shown in the equation below -

BCl3 + H2O → H3PO3 +3HCl

Carbon atom in CCl4 has 8 electrons in the valence shell. Therefore the carbon neither accepts nor donates electron. Therefore it does not undergo any hydrolysis in water.
