Question:
Consider the elements : Cs, Ne, I and F (a) Identify the element that exhibits only negative oxidation state. (b) Identify the element that exhibits only postive oxidation state. (c) Identify the element that exhibits both positive and negative oxidation states . (d) Identify the element which exhibits neither the negative nor does the positive oxidation state.
Answer:

(a) F is more electronegative as it belongs to group 17 or 7 and can show only negative oxidation state of –1.

(b) Cesium is highly electropositive and can show only +1 oxidation state as it has only one electron in its valency shell.

(c) I has 7 electrons in its valency shell and can therefore exibit a oxidation state of –1 , How ever since Iodine has empty d orbitals it can also exibit different oxidation state like +1,+3,+5, +7.

(d) Neon is a inert gas and hence do not exibit any oxidation state.
