Hybridisation occurs in carbon because it has four empty orbitals of similar energies, so they can combine to give orbitals which are more stable and of equal energies. This combination of orbitals is hybridisation. However, hybridisation is seen in other atoms as well. So orbitals of carbon combines with orbitals of other atoms and then forms hybrid orbitals.
