The sodium ion (Na+) is larger than the magnesium ion (Mg2+).
The elements sodium and magnesium are in the same period, but Na is above Mg in the table. The outer electrons of the Mg atom experience greater effective nuclear charge and, more importantly, the magnesium cation, Mg2+, has a greater cationic charge than the Na+ cation.
