Binomial system on nomenclature was proposed by Carl Linnaeus.

According to this universally accepted system of nomenclature, the scientific name of any living organism consists of two components. The first component is called the "generic name" while the second component is called the "specific epithet".

Generic name indicates the genus and specific epithet indicates the species to which the given living organism belongs to.

For example, according to binomial nomenclature the scientific name of human beings is Homo sapiens (where "Homo" indicates genus while "sapiens" indicates species).
