Question:
how is reproduction and growth in unicellular organisms are mutually exclusive events
Answer:

They are mutually exclusive because they grow when they reproduce i.e. when they divide. Example- binary fission. While in higher organism growth refers to enlargement , cell differentiation leading to formation of different tissue.

The other reason for inclusive is- they have single cell to perform functions as they are unicellular. One cell will perform all functions of growth and reproduction.
