Taxon (pl. taxa) is any unit or category of classification that contains a group of individuals sharing some common characteristics. For example, the basic unit of classification is a species, followed by genus, family, order, class, phylum/division and kingdom. All these categories represent the various taxa in a sequential ascending order.
