Plants have multicellular haploid and multicellular diploid stages in their life cycles. In them, gametes develop in the multicellular haploid gametophyte. Fertilization gives rise to a multicellular diploid sporophyte, which produces haploid spores via meiosis. This kind of life cycle is called ahaplodiplontic life cycle. It differs from the normal diplontic life cycle in the term that in normal diplontic life cycle, only the gametes are in the haploid state.
