Herring is actually a fish, which produces a very sticky oil. It belongs to the genus Clupea. DNA which is purified from its sperm is called herring sperm DNA. It is used in nucleic acid hybridisation experiment. So when it is sterilised by usage of steam at high pressure, we get autoclaved herring sperm DNA.
Kinetin, a protein which promotes cell division, was isolated from herring sperm DNA.
