CAM stands for crassulacean acid metabolism, which is shown by plants of some species growing in dry conditions. It is a carbon fixation pathway that evolved in some plants as an adaptation to arid conditions. In such plants, the stomata in the leaves remain shut during the day to reduce transpiration and evaporation, but opens at night to collect carbon dioxide (CO2) for food synthesis.
