The repolarization phase returns the membrane potential to the resting potential membrane. During this process K⁺ channels are open and Na+ channels are closed. This is because the efflux of K⁺ ions results in the falling phase of an action potential. The ions pass through the selectivity filter of the K⁺ channel pore. Whereas Ca²⁺ channels and Na⁺ channels remain closed.
