Question:
Why ketone bodies are produced by the liver under prolonged fasting?
Answer:

Ketone bodies are three water soluble molecules-

Acetoacetate, beta hydroxybutyrate and acetone.

They are produced by liver from fatty acids during periods of low food intake or fasting.

They are always released into blood by liver together with newly produced glucose, after the liver glycogen stores have been depleted.
