Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a used in laboratories to check the proper functioning of the kidneys. It gives an estimate of the quantity of blood passing through the glomeruli in each minute. Glomeruli  are the tiny filters in the nephrons of kidneys that filter waste from the blood.
